Summary
The Lost Sales Projection screen looks forward and estimates the sales you're likely to lose to future stockouts, period by period. The existing Lost Sales screen covers stockouts that have already happened. This screen shows which item-sites will run short, by how much, and what that shortfall is worth in revenue, cost and margin.
You'll find it under Forecast > Lost Sales Projection. You need the View Lost Sales Projection permission to see it. The Forecast View Only and Forecaster roles include this permission. Custom roles need it granted explicitly.
How Projected Lost Sales Are Calculated
Projected lost sales are recalculated every night from your projected inventory.
- Only new shortfall is counted. If an item is short and stays short across several periods, each lost unit counts once, in the period where the shortfall first occurs. It isn't counted again for every period the item stays out of stock.
- Short stockouts are caught. The projection is checked day by day, not just at period end. A stockout that starts and recovers within a single week or month still counts.
- Pricing uses the average cost and price from your forecast, the same source as the Lost Sales screen. If those aren't available, the item-site's standard cost and price are used.
Chart
The top of the screen shows a chart of Projected Lost Sales by Period across all rows that match your filters. You can chart it in currency (lost revenue) or in units (see Display Options).
Projected Lost Sales Grid
Below the chart is one row per item-site per period, with these columns:
- Prj Lost Qty: the units projected to be lost in that period.
- Prj Lost Revenue: the sales value of those units.
- Prj Lost COGS: the cost of those units.
- Prj Lost Margin: revenue minus COGS.
- Prj Shortfall (Period End): the backorder view, meaning how far short the item-site is at the end of the period. This can be larger than the lost quantity because it includes shortfall carried in from earlier periods.
Hidden columns you can turn on include Within Lead Time, Usage Pattern, Order Policy and your item-site categories.
NOTE: Users without the View Prices permission won't see revenue. Users without View Costs won't see COGS. Margin appears only for users who can see both. If a user can't see prices, the chart shows units instead.
NOTE: The screen shows up to 50,000 rows. If more rows match, it keeps the largest projected losses and shows a
"Results Truncated" message, so totals should be read as "at least" these amounts. Narrow your filters, or turn Within Lead Time Only back on, to see everything.
Display Options
Click the Display Options button to see these options:
- Display Interval: group the data into Monthly or Weekly periods.
- Projection Basis: choose which inventory projection the shortfall comes from.
- Open orders only: (default) counts only committed supply. It shows what you'll lose if nothing more is ordered.
- Including suggested orders: assumes every StockIQ suggested order is placed.
- Chart Measure: chart in currency or in units.
- Which Lost Sales
- Within Lead Time Only (on by default): shows only losses that happen before an order placed today could arrive. These are losses you can no longer order your way out of. Turn it off to see the whole projection horizon.
- Include Non-Stock Order Policies (off by default): includes item-sites on Buy To Order, Build To Order and Do Not Order.
- Include Non-Recurring Usage (off by default): includes item-sites whose usage pattern isn't Recurring (new, sporadic or slow movers).
The Lost Sales screen always leaves out non-stock and non-recurring item-sites. Here you can choose to include them.

Click the Subscribe button on the grid toolbar to get this report by email as an XLSX or CSV attachment, either on a schedule or on demand. The email follows the permissions of the person who owns the subscription. If they can't see prices or costs, those values are left out of the email and the attachment. If a report hits the row limit, it says so in the email, on a "Read Me" sheet in the XLSX, and with "(truncated)" in the attachment name.
Click Get Insights from Edison at the top of the screen for an AI-written summary of your projected lost sales. Edison's summary follows the same price and cost permissions as the grid.
